Why is the ocean salty?

Once upon a time, far, far away, lived a little raindrop named Pip. Pip wasn't just any raindrop; he was a very curious raindrop. He loved adventures, and his greatest dream was to see the big, blue ocean everyone talked about.
One sunny morning, Pip woke up high in the sky, nestled amongst thousands of his brothers and sisters. They all held hands, forming a fluffy white cloud, drifting gently on the wind. Pip peered down, mesmerized by the colorful world below. Green fields stretched out like giant carpets, dotted with tiny houses. Sparkling rivers snaked their way across the land, looking like silvery ribbons. And then, he saw it – the ocean! A vast expanse of shimmering blue, stretching as far as the eye could see.
"Oh, I want to go there!" Pip exclaimed, his tiny raindrop heart filled with excitement.
Soon, the cloud grew heavy, laden with countless curious raindrops like Pip. The wind picked up, and the cloud tumbled and turned, growing darker and darker. Then, with a sigh, the cloud opened its watery arms, releasing a torrent of raindrops.
Pip plunged down, down, down, a thrilling ride! He bounced off a giant green leaf, tickled a plump red flower, and finally, landed on a rocky hill overlooking the ocean. He tumbled along with many other raindrops, all racing towards the sea.
As Pip reached the ocean’s edge, he felt the cool, salty spray on his face. “Wow!” he gasped. “What makes the ocean salty?”
Just then, he saw a wise old wave, with sparkling white crests, rolling towards the shore. The wave seemed to smile as it spoke in a deep, rumbling voice.
“Ah, little Pip, that’s a wonderful question! The ocean is salty because of a long, long journey that rivers like the one you just saw take.”
Pip, intrigued, listened intently.
“You see,” the wave explained, “rivers don’t just carry water. As they flow across the land, they pick up tiny pieces of rocks and minerals. These minerals are like little secret ingredients, hidden in the earth. Some of these minerals are salts. These tiny salt particles dissolve in the river water, becoming invisible but still present.”
The wave paused, letting Pip absorb this information. He imagined the river, quietly collecting these tiny salt particles as it flowed past mountains and valleys, through forests and fields.
“Rivers carry these dissolved salts all the way to the ocean,” the wave continued. “But, once the water reaches the ocean, it doesn't leave easily. Most of the water evaporates, turning into vapor and rising up to the sky to form clouds— just like you came from a cloud!"
Pip remembered his journey from the cloud, and nodded.
“But the salt,” the wave boomed, “is too heavy to evaporate. It stays behind in the ocean. Over millions and millions of years, this process has happened again and again and again. Rivers constantly bring more and more salt, and the sun keeps evaporating the water. That's why the ocean has become so salty!”
Pip looked out at the vast, salty ocean. He finally understood! It wasn't just a magical place; it was a place made salty by a continuous, never-ending cycle. Rivers carried tiny pieces of salt from the land, the sun evaporated the water, and the salt remained.
“So, the ocean is like a giant, salty bathtub!” Pip exclaimed, understanding dawning in his tiny raindrop eyes.
The wave chuckled. “That’s a good way to think about it! It’s a bathtub that’s been filling up with salt for millions of years!”
Pip spent the rest of the day exploring the seashore. He learned about the different kinds of shells, the creatures that lived in the sand, and the amazing power of the waves. He even met another raindrop, who had a story to tell about their journey from a faraway mountain.
As the sun began to set, painting the sky in fiery oranges and reds, Pip felt a sense of wonder. He had learned so much about the ocean, and he knew his journey wasn't over. He was a tiny raindrop, but he was part of a massive, incredible cycle, a cycle that kept the ocean salty and full of life. And he couldn't wait to go on more adventures, learning even more secrets of the world around him. He knew he'd always remember his conversation with the wise old wave, and the reason why the ocean is so wonderfully, mysteriously salty. And as he drifted back towards the clouds, he felt a little saltier himself, a tiny reminder of his amazing oceanic adventure.
