Why is it important to pay taxes?

Once upon a time, in a land filled with bouncy castles, lollipop trees, and rivers of chocolate milk, lived a little bear named Cubby. Cubby loved to play! He loved playing in the sunshine-filled playground, splashing in the sparkling clean creek, and zooming down the brightly coloured slides at the amazing park near his house.
One day, Cubby's mama took him to the park. It was even more wonderful than usual! There were new swings, a sparkly new sandbox, and even a little miniature train that chugged around a tiny track. Cubby was so excited he squealed with delight, running straight for the train.
"Mama," Cubby asked, eyes wide with wonder, "how did they get all these amazing new things for the park?"
Mama smiled. "Well, Cubby," she began, "it’s a little bit like magic, but it's also because everyone in our land helps to pay for it. It's called paying taxes."
Cubby frowned. "Taxes? What are those?"
Mama explained, "Imagine our land is a big, beautiful house. This house needs things to keep it happy and healthy, just like our own houses need things like food and light. To keep our big house running smoothly, everyone who lives in it needs to contribute a little bit of their money. That's what taxes are – small contributions from everyone to pay for things that help us all."
Cubby thought about his own little house. He understood that they needed food, a warm bed, and toys. "So," he said thoughtfully, "taxes help pay for the park and everything in it, like the train and swings?"
"Exactly!" Mama said, clapping her hands. "Taxes help pay for the park, the firefighters who keep us safe, the police officers who help keep our streets safe, the lovely people who collect and take away all the rubbish, the schools where children learn lots of interesting things, and even the roads that we drive on to get to the park and everywhere else."
Cubby considered this. He loved the firefighters who came to his birthday party last year with their big shiny red truck. He remembered the friendly police officer who helped him find his lost balloon. He also appreciated the clean streets and the smooth roads that allowed him to get to the park so easily. He even liked the clean and tidy park, without litter and rubbish everywhere!
"So," Cubby said, "if everyone pays taxes, we all get to enjoy these wonderful things?"
"That's right, my little bear," Mama confirmed. "It's like baking a delicious cake. Everyone adds a little bit of ingredient – flour, sugar, eggs, and chocolate chips. When we put them all together, we get a delicious, yummy cake that everyone can enjoy! Taxes are like those ingredients – each person contributes a little bit, and together, we make our land a wonderful place to live."
Mama pointed to the colourful flowers blooming near the creek. "See these beautiful flowers?" she asked. "The gardener who takes care of them gets paid from the taxes people pay. He helps make our park look pretty and helps the bees make yummy honey."
Cubby nodded, now understanding much better. He looked at the sparkling clean creek, the shiny swings, the miniature train, and the blooming flowers. Everything was beautiful and well-maintained. He understood now that his contribution, however small, helped to keep it all running smoothly and beautifully.
"Mama," Cubby said, "when I grow up, I want to pay my taxes too! I want to help keep our land beautiful and safe for everyone, just like the cake example!"
Mama hugged Cubby tightly. "That's my wonderful Cubby," she said, beaming with pride. "When you grow up, you'll understand more about how taxes work, but for now, it's enough to know that by contributing a little bit, we can make our community a better and happier place for everyone. And isn't that a wonderful thing?"
Cubby giggled, and ran off to play on the new swings, his heart filled with the understanding of the importance of sharing and contributing to his community. He knew that his future contributions, in the form of taxes, would help keep the magic of his land alive – the magic of clean streets, safe parks, helpful firefighters, learning opportunities, delicious honey from happy bees, and the bright, shiny smiles of everyone around him. He understood that his small part was a vital piece of a much larger, more beautiful picture. And as he swung higher and higher, he dreamt of all the wonderful things his future taxes would help create. He would be a part of something incredibly important, something that made his world a better place.
