Why does the sky turn blue?

Once upon a time, high above the fluffy white clouds, lived a tiny, mischievous sprite named Lumi. Lumi wasn't like the other sprites who played hide-and-seek amongst the stars. Lumi loved colours! He had a magical paintbrush made from a shooting star, and he spent his days painting the world below.

One day, Lumi woke up feeling particularly playful. He dipped his brush into a giant pot of sparkling, clear water – the purest water in the whole wide universe! He swirled it around, giggling, and then began to paint the vast expanse above the world. He painted big, sweeping strokes of shimmering, bright white. This, he decided, would be the clouds. He loved the way the white bounced light back down to the world, making everything below seem brighter.

Next, he chose a pot of sunshine yellow. He painted playful streaks across the white canvas, making the clouds glow and shimmer. He painted a giant sun, so bright and warm it made him sneeze a tiny cloud of golden dust.

He was having so much fun! He reached for another pot, this one filled with vibrant orange – the color of juicy pumpkins and playful fireflies. He added playful swirls and streaks of orange to the edges of the clouds, making them look even more magical.

But Lumi wasn't finished! He wanted to paint something really special. He rummaged through his giant paintbox, looking for just the right colour. He found a pot with the most amazing colour he’d ever seen! It wasn't one solid colour, but rather a mix of a thousand tiny colours, all shimmering and dancing together. It was a magical mix of red, orange, yellow, green, and blue. He carefully dipped his brush in, excited to see what he could create.

He started painting, adding tiny dabs and strokes of this magical colour all over the sky. But something strange happened! The red, orange, and yellow colours mostly blended with the yellow and orange he’d already painted, making the clouds look even warmer and brighter. The green seemed to hide amongst the white clouds, making them look fresh and alive. But the blue…the blue was different.

The blue, oh, the beautiful blue! It didn't blend in like the other colours. It spread out, filling the spaces between the clouds, making the sky look vast and endless. It seemed to want to be seen, to be noticed! Lumi was amazed.

He watched as the blue spread and spread, painting the sky in a beautiful, vibrant hue. He realised that the blue light was actually tiny bits of all the other colors, but they were so tiny and close together that they blended into this beautiful, rich blue.

He continued painting, adding more of that magical mix, watching in wonder as the blue filled the sky. He learned something very important that day. He learned that sunlight, like his magical paint, is actually made up of many colours. When the sunlight travels through the air, tiny particles in the air, like dust and water, scatter the colours.

The red, orange, and yellow colours are scattered more easily, that's why the clouds appear orange and yellow during sunrise and sunset. But the blue colour, being much smaller and lighter, gets scattered more, all around us! That is why the sky looks blue most of the day.

Lumi finished his painting, feeling very happy. He looked down at the world below. He saw little children playing, birds singing, and flowers blooming. He knew he had created something beautiful, something that made the world a brighter, more joyful place. He also understood that the blue sky wasn’t just a colour; it was a magical mix of light and air, all working together to make a stunning display.

From that day on, Lumi continued to paint the sky, sometimes adding extra splashes of orange and yellow at sunrise and sunset, but always making sure to leave plenty of room for the beautiful, ever-changing blue. And every time he painted, he remembered the lesson he learned – that even the simplest things in the world, like the colour of the sky, can hold the most amazing secrets and wonders, just waiting to be discovered. He also learned that even a simple act of painting, with a sprinkle of magic and a lot of love, can bring joy to everyone below.

And that, my little one, is why the sky is blue. It’s because of all the tiny little bits of light scattering all around us, painting a beautiful blue picture every single day. Just like Lumi's magical paintbrush, the sun paints the sky with its own magical colours, and the blue is the most special of them all! Now, isn't that a wonderful story? We can go outside and look at the sky together, and see if you can see all the different shades of blue Lumi painted!
