Why do we need to cover our mouths when we cough or sneeze?

Once upon a time, in a land filled with sparkling rivers and lollipop trees, lived a tiny, bouncy ball of a creature named Pip. Pip loved to giggle, to jump, and to play hide-and-seek amongst the rainbow flowers. But Pip had a little secret: sometimes, when Pip got a bit tickly in Pip's throat, Pip would let out a big, booming ACHOO! Or a loud, rumbly, cough, cough.
Now, Pip didn't mean to be noisy, honest! It just happened. But after each ACHOO! or cough, cough, Pip noticed something strange. Tiny, invisible friends, smaller than even the tiniest ladybug, would fly out from Pip’s mouth! These weren't scary friends, oh no! They were just… well, a bit mischievous.
These tiny friends were called "Germy-gos." Germy-gos loved to travel! They zoomed around on the breeze, giggling just like Pip, but instead of making people happy, Germy-gos made people feel quite poorly. They’d tickle noses and make throats feel scratchy. They'd cause sniffles and sneezes, making everyone feel a little bit grumpy.
One day, Pip was playing hide-and-seek with a friend named Lily. Lily was a lovely creature with silky fur and big, bright eyes. They were having so much fun, giggling and chasing each other amongst the lollipop trees, that Pip forgot all about Pip’s Germy-gos.
Suddenly, a tickle attacked Pip’s throat! ACHOO! went Pip, a giant sneeze that shook the rainbow flowers. Pip didn’t cover Pip's mouth! The Germy-gos zoomed out, scattering like tiny confetti all over Lily!
Poor Lily! Soon, Lily’s nose started to tickle, then she began to sneeze, and then to cough. Her big, bright eyes became watery, and she didn't feel like playing anymore. Lily had caught the Germy-gos!
Pip felt terrible! Pip didn't want Lily to feel sick. Pip wished Pip had remembered something very important that Pip’s clever teacher, Miss Bloom, had taught Pip. Miss Bloom, you see, knew all about the Germy-gos and how to stop them from spreading their mischief.
Miss Bloom had shown Pip a magical trick. She had explained that when a tickle comes in Pip’s throat, causing a cough or a sneeze, Pip needs to use a special shield, a magical covering! This shield was Pip’s hand, or even a tissue, held gently over Pip’s mouth and nose. It's like a superhero cape for Pip's mouth!
This magical shield, Miss Bloom explained, acts like a net, catching the Germy-gos before they have a chance to fly away and cause trouble. The Germy-gos get trapped in the net and can’t reach others to make them sick. Then, Pip can dispose of the net – throw the tissue away – and the Germy-gos are gone for good!
Pip felt very sad that Lily was sick. Pip decided to visit Lily and learn more about the importance of using the magical shield. Pip learned that Lily’s teacher, Mr. Sunny, taught the same important lesson. Mr. Sunny showed Lily a fun video featuring a friendly cloud who showed how to sneeze into your elbow like a friendly little pillow. Mr. Sunny also mentioned the importance of washing hands properly to get rid of any sneaky Germy-gos that might be lurking.
Pip spent the rest of the day with Lily, sharing stories and making her laugh, which helped Lily feel a little better. Pip promised Lily that Pip would always remember to use Pip’s magical shield whenever a tickle came to Pip's throat.
From that day on, Pip never forgot to cover Pip’s mouth when coughing or sneezing. Pip always remembered the Germy-gos and how important it was to protect Pip’s friends from their mischievous antics. Pip even taught all the other creatures in the lollipop tree land about the magical shield and the importance of washing hands, helping to keep everyone healthy and happy. And because Pip learned this important lesson, Pip continued to have many more fun, healthy days playing hide-and-seek with Lily and all Pip’s other friends among the rainbow flowers. The end.
