Why do we have seasons?

Once upon a time, high above the fluffy clouds, lived a playful giant named Sol. Sol was a giant ball of warmth and light, and he loved to play games with the Earth, his favourite spinning toy. The Earth was a beautiful blue and green ball, covered with swirling oceans and lush green lands. But Sol had a special way of playing. He didn’t just shine his light evenly on the Earth all the time. He liked to play hide-and-seek!

You see, Sol’s light is what brings warmth and makes things grow. My clever colleague, Mrs. Willow, a wonderful kindergarten teacher, told me all about this. She said that the Earth is tilted, like a slightly wonky spinning top. This tilt is very important for our story.

Imagine the Earth as a giant orange. Now, imagine slowly spinning that orange around a bright lamp – that's Sol! Because the orange is tilted, one side will always be closer to the lamp than the other. When one side of the Earth is tilted closer to Sol, that side gets much more of his warm, sunny light. It’s like when you hold your hand close to a fire – it gets really toasty!

This is what happens during summertime! The side of the Earth tilted towards Sol gets lots and lots of sunlight, making the days long and warm. The sun shines brightly, and the land gets hot. The plants soak up all that warm sunlight and grow big and strong, producing lots of delicious fruits and vegetables. Everything seems to burst with life and color. You can go swimming in the warm water, wear shorts and t-shirts, and play outside all day long! Evenings are long and full of fireflies dancing in the twilight.

But Sol doesn't stay focused on one side forever! As the Earth keeps spinning, slowly, slowly, he starts to play hide-and-seek. The side that was once closest to Sol starts to tilt away. The sunlight becomes less direct, like when you hold your hand further away from the fire – it’s still warm, but not as hot as before.

This is autumn, my little one. The days get shorter, and the nights get longer. The leaves on the trees change colours – from green to yellow, orange, and red – before falling to the ground, making a crunchy carpet for you to jump in! The warm weather starts to fade, and we begin to need sweaters and jackets to keep warm.

As the Earth continues its journey around Sol, the side tilted away from the warmth gets even further. Now, Sol’s light is even weaker. Imagine the feeling when you go outside on a chilly night, the air nips at your fingers. This, my love, is winter! The days are short, and the nights are long. It gets cold, and sometimes even snows! It's the time for cozy nights indoors, reading books and drinking hot chocolate. The plants rest, hiding their seeds under the snow, waiting for the warmth to return.

And then, something magical happens! Slowly, slowly, the Earth starts tilting back towards Sol. The days get a little longer, and the cold starts to melt away. The sun's light becomes a little stronger each day. The plants wake up from their long winter sleep, their tiny shoots pushing through the melting snow.

This is springtime! The world starts to awaken! Everything seems to be refreshed and renewed. Tiny buds appear on the branches, and colorful flowers bloom everywhere. The air smells fresh and clean, like a new beginning. Animals wake up from their long sleep, happy to see the warm sun again. You can enjoy springtime walks, watch birds build their nests, and explore the amazing beauty of the world around you.

And then, the cycle begins again! Summer, autumn, winter, spring – a beautiful dance between the Earth and Sol. Mrs. Willow says that it is because of this tilt and the Earth's journey around Sol that we have seasons. It’s a magical, never-ending game of hide-and-seek that brings warmth, coolness, and all the wonders of nature throughout the year! So next time you see a beautiful sunset, remember Sol playing his amazing game, and appreciate the gift of the seasons! And remember, my dear, every season has its own special beauty and magic! We get to experience all of the wonderful changes that the Earth gives us, all because of Sol's fun game of hide-and-seek! Isn't that amazing? Now, let's go and play outside, before the sun starts setting.
