Why do we feel jealous?

Once upon a time, in a land filled with bouncy mushrooms and giggling flowers, lived a little fluffy creature. This creature loved to collect shiny pebbles. Oh, how they sparkled in the sunlight! He had a whole special collection, nestled safely in a tiny, woven basket. He’d spend hours arranging them, admiring their different colors and shapes. He called it his "Sparkle Treasure."
One day, a new creature came to live nearby. This new creature was very friendly, always offering a smile and a playful bounce. The little fluffy creature liked the newcomer, but something strange started happening. Whenever the newcomer showed off their collection of shiny things – not pebbles, but smooth, colorful leaves – the fluffy creature felt a funny feeling in his tummy. It felt like a tight squeeze, a little bit prickly, and made him want to…well, he wasn’t quite sure what he wanted, but it wasn't pleasant.
He found himself staring longingly at the newcomer’s leaves. They were so vibrant! Some shimmered like emeralds, others glowed like rubies. The newcomer, noticing the fluffy creature’s intense gaze, happily shared their beautiful leaves, showing off their different textures and how they changed color in the sunlight.
But instead of feeling happy for the newcomer, the fluffy creature felt even more of that prickly feeling. He grumbled to himself, "They have such pretty leaves! My pebbles aren't as shiny." He started to feel a little sad, a little grumpy, and even a little bit angry.
That night, while snuggling with his mama (who was a very wise and understanding creature), the fluffy creature confessed his feelings. He explained about the newcomer's leaves, how wonderful they were, and how this made him feel unhappy.
Mama smiled gently. "My dear," she said, "that feeling you have, that tight squeeze in your tummy, is called jealousy. Jealousy happens when we see someone else having something we want, or seeming to have something better than us."
The fluffy creature looked puzzled. "But why?" he asked.
Mama explained, "Imagine your Sparkle Treasure. You love those pebbles, right? They make you happy. Jealousy is like a little shadow that tries to steal that happiness. It whispers mean things in your ear, like 'Your pebbles aren't as good,' or 'They are better than you.'"
She continued, "But those whispers aren't true. Your pebbles are special because you chose them. You love them, and that's what makes them special. The newcomer's leaves are wonderful, too, but they don't take away from the beauty of your pebbles."
Mama brought out a beautiful, smooth stone, almost glowing with an inner light. "See this stone?" she asked. "It’s not a pebble, and it's different from the newcomer's leaves. But it's beautiful in its own way, just like your pebbles and their leaves. There’s room for all kinds of beautiful things in the world, and there’s room for all kinds of happiness."
"So," Mama continued, "when you feel that prickly feeling, that's your body telling you that jealousy is trying to visit. Instead of letting it take over, try to remember how much you love your own Sparkle Treasure. Remember the joy of collecting them, the time you spent arranging them. Remember the happy feeling you get when you look at them."
The fluffy creature thought about this. He remembered the fun he had finding each pebble, the unique way each one sparkled. He remembered the pride he felt in his carefully curated collection.
Mama added, "You can also try to share your happiness with others. Show the newcomer your beautiful pebbles. Maybe they'll even show you something new in their collection that you've never seen before! Sharing happiness makes it grow bigger, and it helps push away the jealousy shadow."
The fluffy creature felt the tight squeeze in his tummy begin to loosen. He realized his pebbles were special because he loved them. He wasn't less because someone else had something different.
The next day, the fluffy creature saw the newcomer again. Instead of feeling jealous, he felt a warmth in his heart. He proudly showed the newcomer his Sparkle Treasure, and the newcomer, delighted, shared some of their new discoveries – fascinating seeds with tiny, delicate wings. They spent the afternoon happily playing together, sharing their treasures and discovering new wonders, side by side. The jealousy shadow had vanished, replaced by the bright sunshine of friendship and shared joy. And that, my little one, is how we learn to overcome jealousy – by remembering our own value, sharing our happiness, and appreciating the beauty in everyone and everything around us.
