Why do we celebrate holidays?

Once upon a time, nestled in a valley painted with sunflowers and sparkling rivers, lived a little village called Sunnybrook. Sunnybrook wasn’t just any village; it was a village that loved to celebrate! But little Leo, a three-year-old with bright eyes and even brighter socks, didn't quite understand why. He loved the parties, the yummy treats, and the bright decorations, but the why always puzzled him.

One day, Leo’s mommy, who worked with a wise teacher named Ms. Lily, decided to explain. Ms. Lily, with years of experience making learning fun for little ones, had a wonderful idea. "Let's tell Leo a story," she suggested to Leo's mom.

“Okay, Leo, let’s imagine Sunnybrook is a big, happy family,” Mommy began. "Every family has special moments, right? Like when you learn to ride your bike, or when you build a magnificent tower of blocks, or even when you share your toys with your friends.”

Leo nodded enthusiastically. He loved building towers!

"Well, holidays are like giant family celebrations for Sunnybrook," Mommy continued. "They are special days when the whole village comes together to remember important things, to be thankful, and to look forward to wonderful things to come."

Mommy pointed to a picture book she'd brought. It showed pictures of people harvesting crops. “See this picture, Leo? This is how Sunnybrook celebrates the Harvest Festival. It's a time to celebrate the hard work of growing food. All year long, the villagers plant seeds, water them carefully, and protect the plants from the weather. When the crops are ready, they harvest them, and they are SO happy! They've worked hard, and now they have plenty of delicious food to share with everyone. The Harvest Festival is a way of saying 'thank you' for all the yummy food and for the hard work that went into it.”

Leo listened intently, his eyes wide. He loved eating yummy food!

Mommy turned the page, revealing pictures of colorful lights and festive decorations. "And this is how Sunnybrook celebrates the Festival of Lights! It’s a time to remember the importance of light and warmth, especially during the long, dark nights. They light candles and lanterns to remind everyone that even in the darkest times, there is always hope and warmth to be found. It’s a time to share stories and spend time together, keeping the light of friendship bright.”

Leo loved bright lights, especially the twinkle lights on his Christmas tree (though it wasn’t Christmas yet!).

Mommy flipped another page. This page showed a colorful parade with floats representing different aspects of the community. “And this is the Sunnybrook Community Celebration! It celebrates everything they’ve accomplished together throughout the year – the new school they built, the beautiful park they planted, the new bridge they finished across the river. It's a chance to show appreciation for each other and for all the amazing things they do as a community. They have parades, games, and delicious food and everyone celebrates the amazing people in their village.”

Leo giggled. He loved parades, especially the ones with fire trucks!

Mommy closed the book. "So, you see, Leo," she said softly. "Holidays are a way of remembering, celebrating, and expressing gratitude. They help us remember what's important – like hard work, friendship, light, and community. They bring people together, creating happy memories that we treasure for a long time. Just like when we build a great tower together, or when we have a wonderful day at the park – those are little celebrations in themselves, right?"

Leo nodded, a thoughtful expression on his face. "So holidays are like... big, happy memories?"

"Exactly!" Mommy exclaimed, giving him a hug. "They're like giant happy memories, shared by everyone in the village of Sunnybrook... and even beyond! Every family and culture celebrates holidays in different ways, but the feeling behind them is always the same – to remember, to appreciate, and to share joy with those we love."

Leo looked at his Mommy, a new understanding dawning in his eyes. He grasped that holidays weren't just about presents and sweets, but about something much bigger and more meaningful. They were a special time to connect with others and share in the happiness of being together.

Later that day, Leo helped his Mommy set the table for dinner. He carefully placed the napkins, his eyes twinkling with a newfound appreciation. For him, this simple act became a small celebration, a reminder of the joy and gratitude that holidays bring. He understood now. Holidays weren't just about the fun; they were about the connections, the memories, and the shared happiness that binds everyone together, just like the happy family of Sunnybrook. And that, Leo realized, was something truly special.
