Why are there different time zones?

Once upon a time, far, far away, lived a family of friendly Sunbeams. Not the kind you see warming your face on a sunny day, oh no! These Sunbeams were magical, tiny beings who lived on the Sun itself! They were so incredibly fast, they zipped around the Sun in a flash!
Their job? To deliver sunshine! They each carried a little pouch full of sunshine, bright and warm and golden. Their leader, a jolly Sunbeam named Sol, organized their deliveries every single day.
Now, imagine the Earth, a big, round ball spinning slowly in space. Sol had to make sure every part of the Earth got its sunshine, but the Earth was so huge! One side of the Earth was always facing the Sun, while the other side was dark, asleep in the night.
Sol had a clever solution. He divided the Earth into many, many slices, like a giant orange! Each slice was called a “time zone.”
"See," Sol explained to his team of Sunbeams, pointing to a giant map of the Earth that hung in their sunny headquarters. "This slice here is getting sunshine right now. These Sunbeams, Zoom, Zip, and Zap, you'll deliver your sunshine here. But look! This slice over here is still dark. It’s nighttime there. Those Sunbeams will deliver their sunshine later, when it's their turn."
Zoom, Zip, and Zap, who were three of Sol's most eager Sunbeams, excitedly grabbed their sunshine pouches. Their pouches were special; they didn't spill a single ray, even when they zipped around at super-speed!
Zoom flew towards a slice of the Earth where it was bright and sunny. He saw children playing in a park, laughing and giggling. He gently sprinkled his sunshine, warming their faces and making the flowers bloom even brighter. "Good morning!" he whispered as he zipped away.
Zip flew to another slice, where it was early morning. He saw sleepy-eyed creatures waking up, stretching and yawning. He showered them with sunshine, helping them feel bright and energized for their day. "Good morning!" he chirped, making the sky a beautiful shade of sunrise orange.
Zap, however, flew to a slice where the sun had already set. He saw tiny lights twinkling in windows, and creatures snuggled in their beds. He carefully sprinkled a little moonlight-like glow, making sure it was soft and gentle, perfect for sleepy times. "Good night!" he whispered, leaving a trail of silvery light.
Sol watched his Sunbeams flit across the Earth, delivering sunshine at different times. He explained to a new Sunbeam, Spark, who was still learning the ropes: "Because the Earth is round and spinning, and the Sun can only shine on one side at a time, we need different time zones. It's like a relay race, each Sunbeam taking their turn to deliver sunshine to a different part of the Earth."
Spark, with his eyes wide with wonder, asked, "So, if it's daytime here, it could be nighttime somewhere else?"
"Exactly!" Sol beamed. "That's why we have clocks and calendars. They help us keep track of the time in each time zone. When it's lunchtime for Zoom's slice, it might be bedtime for Zap's slice!"
Sol then showed Spark a special clock with many hands, each representing a different time zone. "This is a world clock," Sol said. "It shows the time in all the different slices of the Earth. See how some hands point to daytime and others to nighttime? That's because the Sun is shining on some parts of the Earth and not others."
After a long day of sunshine delivery, the Sunbeams returned to their sunny headquarters, tired but happy. They knew their work was important – delivering sunshine and making sure everyone, no matter where they lived on the big round Earth, got their fair share of bright, warm, golden light. And even though some parts of the Earth were having day while others were having night, the world was still a connected place, thanks to the teamwork of the magical Sunbeams and the understanding of time zones.
The Sunbeams showed how important it is to work together and how even though things seem different in different places, we are all connected. And that, little one, is why we have different time zones – so everyone on Earth can enjoy their sunshine at the right time! Now, it's time for you to have your sunshine… which means it's bedtime!
